Romero was founded in 577 as a city state. It was the first of a group of city states that would eventually unite to form the nation of Tellia.
Founded by travelling monks seeking religious tolerance and freedom, Romero is a city rich with history and religious significance. It contains the 3rd largest church in the world, the First Tellian Church of Romero. The building that contains it is larger than any football stadium in the city and cost more than every Royal Residence in the nation combined.
In the year 729 Romero began to grow to be more than just a religious city. For the first time, it became the largest city in Tellia. By 800 it's population formed around 20% of the population.
Romero continued to grow right through the middle ages. It remained a scholarly place, housing the first Tellian library (destroyed by terrorists, early 2007) and the first University in Tellia, called the University of Romero.
Romero attracted intellectuals from all over the globe. They normally spent a few years in the city and then went back to their homes to spread their knowledge. The University of Romero opened branch locations in Metta and eventually Ravenna, and it directly participated in the founding of universities in other nations as well.
Today, the University is the largest educational institution in Tellia. The city itself has changed little and yet much at the same time.
In 1969 the City Government voted to separate the city so that the historical landmarks, palaces, and the "Old Town" itself would remain as they had always been. Skyscrapers, factories, and new buildings would all reside in a B area.
This has led to a unique mix...The city has formed into two large round areas, separated in the middle by a large National Highway. In the west, the old town is filled with history. In the East, Technology has taken the B area by storm.
Eventually, differences in the area became too great. While remaining one city, the Government voted in 1992 to have two mayors, elected from the populations of the Old Town and B Area respectively. These mayors and their offices general administrate their own sectors without interference. Joint decisions are a rare occurrence and are only used when an issue affects the entire region.
Romero now has around 8,000,000 people living within its borders. The major industries include Tourism, Manufacturing, and Banking. Romero is home to over 80 financial institutions which work around the globe.
